How about a wig? The ACS provides both at no charge to any cancer patient currently in treatment (arrange for your free wig by calling the 800 number listed above).
Have chemotherapy treatments caused worries about make up or hair? Register to attend the ACS's free "Look Good Feel Better" program. It's a 2 hour session devoted to female cancer patients and it does just what the name implies; makes you look good and feel better! You get a fabulous bag full of wonderful cosmetics, and presentation by a Licensed Cosmetolgist and/or a Licensed Esthetician. The program covers make up, hair issues and includes a discussion on the different types of wigs, headwraps and accessories on the market today.
Take advantage of what the American Cancer Society offers; it is absolutely free. It's a great organization to which I am proud to refer my customers!
Here are some recommendations of cosmetic services for women in Northern California:
It's hard for those of us who have lost our hair to have any kind of facial treatment or procedure done without feeling very self conscious. I've been very fortunate to have found some terrific resources myself here in Northern California. Below I share my favorite local women-owned businesses.
I've found a fabulous place for inner and outer healing at Beauty Body Wellness in Larkspur, CA, owned by Anna Marie Colavito, Larkspur, CA - Anne Marie takes my hair loss in stride, which allows me to remove my hair piece without embarrassment. They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and I can attest to that! Starting just prior to my 16th birthday, I noticed I was losing my hair. I immediately began a quest to find good looking ways to camouflage my hair loss.
It took me several years, and lots of tears, before I found exactly what I needed in order to learn to cope with what was happening to me. First, I met a woman whom I call B, with the same type of hair loss (Androgenetic Alopecia), and she became my BFF! Through her, I met a fabulous stylist named Charle Dewitt. Once I bought a beautiful hair piece and had it styled, I knew I was on my way to conquering this traumatic hair loss experience.
Charle and I had a wonderful rapport, and became close friends, which resulted in a warm and supportive relationship that is still going strong to this day. Shortly after I met Charle, I began consulting with other women with hair loss, assisting them in finding just the right hair piece, and encouraging them in their own quest to find ways to cope. I started writing about hair loss in a quarterly newsletter, and was a founding member of the first women’s support group for Androgenetic Alopecia. I was invited to participate in a women’s panel on hair loss and appeared on The Today Show (interviewed by Katie Couric). In addition, Charle and I both appeared on the Dr. Dean Edell television show in San Francisco, talking about the emotional issues of women’s hair loss. All very cathartic!
As beautiful as my hair piece was, there were times when I couldn’t or didn’t want to wear it. This necessity lead me to design a collection of Headwraps, Sleep Caps, Baseball Caps and accessories for women as an alternative to wearing hair pieces. I called my collection Headwrap of Marin. Several years ago, life happened, (as it always does!) and I needed to make a career change. Sadly, I was no longer able to offer my Headwraps.
Now to the good news! The Headwrap of Marin lady is back! I have improved my original design of finely detailed, beautifully crafted Headwraps and accessories. This Headwrap of Marin collection, made in Northern California, is offered on my Etsy website: www.ninisniche.etsy.com. In addition to Headwraps and accessories, I also offer Chemo slouch caps, accent scarves, shawls and Yoga Hair wraps.
I love having my Headwrap business back, and look forward to any comments or suggestions you may have regarding my website!
